Project Outcome: Volcano eruption
Project Description: As part of their self-initiated Genius Hour project, the students explored the scientific phenomenon of a volcano eruption through a hands-on experiment. This open-ended inquiry allowed them to apply scientific thinking by forming hypotheses, researching the causes and stages of volcanic eruptions, and recreating the process using safe, household materials.
Throughout the project, they investigated chemical reactions—particularly the interaction between baking soda and vinegar—while observing how pressure builds and results in an “eruption”. This engaging activity helped them understand scientific concepts like cause and effect, states of matter, and gas formation. The project concluded with a live demonstration and explanation of their model, showcasing their curiosity, experimentation process, and understanding of natural phenomena.
