Project Description:
Viana Desai’s individual Humanities project focuses on designing a smart, sensor-based automated streetlight system aimed at improving public safety while promoting energy efficiency. The project addresses the need for sustainable urban infrastructure by integrating technology with environmental responsibility.
Project Concept & Approach:
The system is designed using light and motion sensors that automatically regulate streetlight intensity based on surrounding conditions. Streetlights remain dim or switched off when there is sufficient natural light or no movement, and automatically brighten when pedestrians or vehicles are detected. This ensures optimal lighting only when required, reducing unnecessary energy consumption.
The development process involved research into real-world applications of automation in urban systems, followed by circuit design, model building, and testing to ensure functionality and reliability.
Project Outcome:
The final outcome is a working model that demonstrates how smart technology can be applied to everyday infrastructure to enhance efficiency and sustainability. Through this project, Viana has shown strong understanding of systems thinking, practical application of technology, and the ability to connect scientific innovation with real-world urban challenges.
